Plagiarism sleuths tackle full-text biomedical articles

TechAndComputer (Oct. 25, 2010) — In scientific publishing, how much reuse of text is too much? Researchers at the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute at Virginia Tech and collaborators have shown that a computer-based text-searching tool is capable of unearthing questionable publication practices from thousands of full-text papers in the biomedical literature.

The first step in the process is to find out what is restated before zeroing in on who may have crossed an ethically unacceptable threshold. The findings, published in PLoS ONE, offer hope for curbing unethical scientific publication practice, a growing problem throughout the world.

Computational model of swimming fish could inspire design of robots or medical prosthetics

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Oct. 18, 2010) — Scientists at the University of Maryland and Tulane University have developed a computational model of a swimming fish that is the first to address the interaction of both internal and external forces on locomotion. The interdisciplinary research team simulated how the fish's flexible body bends, depending on both the forces from the fluid moving around it as well as the muscles inside. Understanding these...

New tool in the fight against tuberculosis: Algorithm enables cell-scale simulations

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Oct. 8, 2010) — Researchers at the Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois have developed a way to harness the prodigious quantities of both genomic and metabolic data being generated with high-throughput genomics and other techniques. They have developed an algorithm that automatically integrates both data sets. The model, called probabilistic regulation of metabolism (PROM), enables researchers to perturb a...

Species accumulate on Earth at slower rates than in the past, computational biologists say

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Oct. 1, 2010) — Computational biologists at the University of Pennsylvania say that species are still accumulating on Earth but at a slower rate than in the past.

In the study, published in the journal PLoS Biology, Penn researchers developed a novel computational approach to infer the dynamics of species diversification using the family trees of present-day species. Using nine patterns of diversification as alternative models,...

Interaction with neighbors: Neuronal field simulates brain activity

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Sep. 27, 2010) — The appearance of a spot of light on the retina causes sudden activation of millions of neurons in the brain within tenths of milliseconds. At the first cortical processing stage, the primary visual cortex, each neuron thereby receives thousands of inputs from both close neighbors and further distant neurons, and also sends out an equal amount of output to others. In recent decades, individual characteristics of...
