Video games depict religion as violent, problematized, study shows

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Feb. 27, 2012) — In the past few years, the video game industry has grown from a niche market into a major part of mainstream media. This increase in popularity and use of technology has allowed video game developers to insert more detail and nuance into the storylines of their games. Many video games have begun incorporating religion as a key aspect to plot points and story lines. Greg Perreault, a doctoral student in the University of Missouri School of Journalism, found that the many newer-generation video games equate religion with violence in the game narratives.

Perreault examined five recent video games that incorporate religion heavily into the storyline. The video games he studied were "Mass Effect...

Impulsive kids play more video games, and kids who play more video games may become more impulsive

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Feb. 23, 2012) — Impulsive children with attention problems tend to play more video games, while kids in general who spend lots of time video gaming may also develop impulsivity and attention difficulties, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

"This is an important finding because most research on attention problems has focused on biological and genetic factors rather than on environmental factors," said Douglas A...

Virtual reality supports planning by architects

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Feb. 15, 2012) — Even the most exact construction plan lacks many details and design options. The building owner needs imagination to obtain an idea of the constructed building. Now, the 3D video glasses made by the KIT spin-off "inreal Technologies" provide a true representation in virtual reality. With the help of integrated high-resolution motion sensors, the virtual environment adapts to the natural movement of the head in real time. At the CeBIT, the young...

Faster-than-fast Fourier transform

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Jan. 18, 2012) — The Fourier transform is one of the most fundamental concepts in the information sciences. It's a method for representing an irregular signal -- such as the voltage fluctuations in the wire that connects an MP3 player to a loudspeaker -- as a combination of pure frequencies. It's universal in signal processing, but it can also be used to compress image and audio files, solve differential equations and price...

Computer simulations shed light on the physics of rainbows

  • PDF
TechAndComputer (Dec. 6, 2011) — Computer scientists at UC San Diego, who set out to simulate all rainbows found in nature, wound up answering questions about the physics of rainbows as well. The scientists recreated a wide variety of rainbows -- primary rainbows, secondary rainbows, redbows that form at sunset and cloudbows that form on foggy days -- by using an improved method for simulating how light interacts with water drops of various...
